The No. 68 Cowgirl tennis team finished their non-conference season with their fifth win in a row Sunday, shutting out visiting Weber State, 7-0. Wyoming (10-3 overall) was dominant across the board. Doubles wins included Simona Synkova-Kim van Ginkel over Naseem Eslami-Brittiny Moore, 8-1; Rebecca Berger-Alexandra Kovacs over Annika Karlsen-Michelle Warwick, 8-2; and Veronica Popovici-Carly Van Hollen over Nittaya Phonharath-Kristi Russell, 8-0. Singles wins included Synkova over Moore, 6-1, 6-3; van Ginkel over Karlsen, 6-1, 6-0; Berger over Warwick, 6-0, 6-0; Popovici over Eslami, 6-3, 6-3; Van Hollen over Phonharath, 6-1, 6-2; and Sasa Nemcova over Russell, 6-1, 6-1, according to Wyoming Athletics. Popovici and Van Hollen lead the Cowgirls in doubles with a 13-2 overall record so far this season. Synkova and van Ginkel have also impressed posting a record of 15-6 going into conference play. Popovici is also tops in singles matches with an overall record of 22-6. Thirteen of those wins are in tournament play. Van Ginkel is close behind with a 19-5 record. With their non-conference schedule in the rearview mirror, the Cowgirls will begin their conference season today at 11 a.m. against the No. 47 San Diego State Aztecs in Las Vegas. The Aztecs are currently 9-6 overall and are also riding a five-game winning streak. Their last outing resulted in a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount. Junior sisters Roxanne and Sierra Ellison lead SDSU with a doubles record of 16-4 and are ranked 51st. Senior Julia Trunk leads the squad in singles play with a record of 14-8. The Cowgirls will continue conference play against the No. 52 UNLV Lady Rebels tomorrow, also at 11 a.m. in Vegas. The Lady Rebels went 11-4 in non-conference play. After a five game winning streak earlier in the season, UNLV has lost three out of their last five, including a 4-3 defeat in their last match at the hands of Mississippi March 16, according to UNLV Athletics. Leading the way in doubles play with a record of 12-3 for UNLV are senior Anna Maskaljun and freshman Lucia Batta. Batta leads the team in singles matches with a 20-7 record and Maskaljun has posted an 18-4 record so far this season. She has won her last 11 singles matches.
