53rd Mt. SAC Relays to feature world class competitors


Wyoming track and field is headed to California for the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif. after a fair showing at the CU Invite in Boulder last weekend. 

Wyoming has four meets remaining before the Mountain West Conference Championships in Ft. Collins which begin May 11.  

The world-renowned Mt. SAC Relays will feature competitors from around the country and around the world, according to the Mt. SAC Relays entry list. 

In their last outing, the Cowgirls were led by sophomore Diana Long, who won the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.06, and junior Ashley Hutchinson, who came out victorious in the shot put at 46’-1 ¼”. 

Additionally, sophomore Chantel Bernabo finished second in the 100-meter dash at 11.95 seconds, freshman Candace Wollert finished fourth in the 400-meter dash at 56.77 sec., freshman Christine Nelson was fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:35.43, and sophomore Maggie Ochsner was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.49 sec., according to Wyoming Athletics. The men’s team also held their own in Boulder. 

The 4X100m relay team of junior Travis Gunderson, sophomore Stephen Michel, sophomore Brandon Douglass and sophomore Mario Harris won the event with a time of 40.86 seconds. It was the seventh-best finish ever by a Cowboy 4X100m team.

Individually, Douglass finished second in the 110m hurdles at 14.85 sec. Sophomore Lenyn Leonce won the long jump with a measurement of 24’0 ¼” and junior Joe Riccio was first in shot put at 52’ 10”.Harris finished fifth in the 200m dash, his first outdoor run of the season, with a time of 22.12 sec., according to Wyoming Athletics.

Wyoming kicks off the Mt. SAC relays today and competition will continue through tomorrow. 

According to the National Weather Service, Walnut, Calif. will be in the mid-80s for the meet.
