Cowgirl tennis split duals this weekend falling Saturday to No. 56 Wichita State but rallying Sunday to take four of six singles matches to beat UT Arlington.

The Cowgirls fell 4-2 to the No. 56 Wichita State Shockers. Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel won their doubles match against Veronika Blaskova and Montse Blasco-Fernandez. The only other wins on the day came from the doubles team of Carly Van Hollen and Veronica Popovici, and a singles victory from Popovici who defeated Raphaela Zotter in straight sets.

Against UT Arlington, the Cowgirls rebounded by winning two of three doubles matches and taking four victories in singles competition to take the dual against the Mavericks, 5-2. Synkova and van Ginkel won again as did Van Hollen and Popovici.

Sophomore Alexandra Kovacs won in straight sets over Daiana Negreanu. Popovici and van Ginkel also won in straight sets while Sasa Nemcova defeated Katarina Micochova in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 10-6).

“We’re much, much, much tougher than we used to be as a team,” assistant coach Dean Clower said. “At one point we would have four or five girls playing well but now all seven girls are playing well and playing tough.”

The Cowgirls are four matches away from entering their conference schedule, which begins March 31 against San Diego State. Since their winter schedule began, the Cowgirls are 6-3 in their non-conference run.

Clower said that the team is trying to improve each week leading up to conference and is trying to position themselves to compete in the Mountain West.

“We want to build our confidence so that we enter the conference scheduling knowing that there’s not a team we can’t beat,” said Clower.

Wyoming is third in the conference behind Air Force and UNLV with no teams having started their conference schedule.

The Cowgirls will be home this weekend as they take on Eastern Washington University for their first home match of the season. The Cowgirls will take on the Eagles at 10 a.m. Saturday.
