Wyoming track and field will follow up a meet with nationally-ranked teams by competing in a meet hosted by the Big 12’s University of Colorado in Boulder at Potts Fieldw. In last year’s Colorado Invitational, the Cowgirls finished with 16 top-five performances while the Cowboys finished with 15, according to Wyoming Athletics. “At this point in the season we’re concentrated on making small improvements at every event and staying healthy,” Head coach Don Yentes said. Wyoming has six meets left on their schedule before the Mountain West Conference Championships. Individually, the Cowboys have nine top-five athletes in the Mountain West rankings, according to the Mountain West Conference. Garrett Zans ranks fourth in the steeplechase and second in the 1,500m run. Fellow distance runner Greg Miller is fifth in the men’s 1,500m and third in the men’s 5,000m. Brandon Douglass is fifth in the conference standings in the men’s 110m hurdles. Tyler Skinner ranks first in the men’s high jump. Stephen Michael ranks fourth in the long jump. Jaymes Talkington ranks fifth in the triple jump and Joe Ricco is fourth in the conference in the hammer throw, according to the Mountain West Conference. The Cowgirls have six top-five conference marks. Afiya Walker is third in the 400m run while Christine Nelson is third in the women’s 5,000m. Diana Long is second in the 400m hurdles. Ashley Hutchinson is fifth in the shot put and the Cowgirls hold the second and fifth spots in the in 4X400 and 4X100 relays, respectively. Coach Yentes is hoping that his athletes will improve but also for fair weather conditions. “One thing that we struggle with as a program in Wyoming is finding good conditions to compete in,” Yentes said. “Hopefully we’ll get some nice weather for this weekend.” According to weather.com, the conditions in Boulder are expected to be in the mid-sixties and partly cloudy for Saturday. Teams competing at the invite include Air Force, Chadron State, Colorado State, Colorado College, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State-Pueblo, Mesa State, Metro State, Northern Colorado, UC-Colorado Springs, Western State and host UC-Boulder.
