As finals get closer and closer, the hours at Coe Library are growing longer. Today, the Student Activities Council hosts a concert for a much needed study break.

David Wax Museum will perform at 8 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. David Wax and Suz Slezak are the two members of the band.

Wax finished his degree at Harvard University before heading back to the Mexican countryside to study its rich folk music tradition on a year-long fellowship. It was there that he first began blending Midwestern folk with the instruments, rhythms, lyrical themes and song structures of son mexicano, according to the David Wax Museum website.

“Slezak was reared on music–traditional Irish, classical, old-time and folk. She graduated from Wellesley College, traveled around the world…then found herself back in Boston where she met David Wax…[Slezak] is the Museum’s anchor to American roots music and helps fashion its distinctive sound with her fiddling and harmony vocals. Since 2007, David and Suz have formed the core of the Museum,” according to the website.

Stephanie Long, SAC graduate assistant, traveled to Washington DC in March of 2009 and saw David Wax Museum in concert at a small venue called the Rock & Roll Hotel.

The twenties will come roaring back with a vengeance when Broadway’s razzle-dazzle, smash musical “Chicago” hits Laramie.

As its concluding production for the semester, department of theatre and dance will bring the internationally-acclaimed Broadway show. Chicago will run April 12-16 at 7:30 p.m. and April 17 at 2 p.m. on the Fine Arts Main Stage.

Director Leigh Selting said in a theater and dance press release that he was pleased to secure the rights to produce the show.

“As a young actor, I was in a production of ‘Chicago’ in 1981, after the original production had closed, and I’ve always wanted to direct the piece myself,” he said in the release. “As the revival of ‘Chicago’ is still playing on Broadway today, we’re quite fortunate to be able to produce the show.  I’d inquired about the performance rights for a number of years, and we were finally notified last spring that the University of Wyoming was granted permission to produce the show.”
