The Covid-19 pandemic forced everyone to stay at home. During this additional free time, many people found an escape in baking, cooking, exercising, and even gaming. One such game which kept the youngsters and elderly busy alike was Animal Crossing. Now, this game has received further recognition and won several awards. This year, Tokyo Game Show named Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch as the Game of the Year. The game also won the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) excellence award.
Developers’ statement and reaction
A press statement said a slow-life experience in the game, which allowed people to do whatever they desired without any restrictions sold it. It became a comfort to people in the current situation as many countries in the world were under complete lockdown. Communication with close friends and the interaction with other players went beyond the bounds of the game. The statement continued,
The game showed the power of entertainment from Japan, acquiring overwhelming support from many users of all ages, from children to senior citizens, in general voting, and won both the Award for Excellence and the Grand Award with unanimity.
Besides these two awards, Animal Crossing: New Horizons also bagged the Minister of Economy’s Trade and Industry Award at the Japan Game Awards. This honor is reserved for those who have made a significant contribution to the growth and development of the Japanese computer entertainment software industry.
Xbox head Phil Spencer has time and again expressed his appreciation for the game. Earlier, he called it a jewel too. Recently, he appeared on Gary Whitta’s talk show inside the game called Animal Talking and praised the game.
Since March, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over 22 million copies. This number makes it the second-highest selling game on Nintendo Switch.
Other games which won the awards
Thirteen other games won the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) excellence award along with Animal Crossing. They are Aegis Rim, Death Stranding, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Nioh 2, Persona 5 Royal, Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield, Ring Fit Adventure, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Further, Dragon Quest Walk secured a special award, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare secured the Global Award: Foreign Product. Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield received the Best Sales Award and Global Award: Japanese Product. Hempuli’s Baba is You bagged the Game Designers Award.
