The University of Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team defeated the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Lady Rebels 51–47 in overtime Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev. UW moved to 9–12 on the season and 5–3 in the Mountain West Conference while UNLV fell to 17–7 on the year and 5–3 in conference. The Cowgirls had three players in double figures, led by freshman Kayla Woodward with 16 points, junior Chaundra Sewell with 14 points and junior Brenna Freeze with 10 points.
“So many players stepped up tonight, from Kayla and Chaundra to Brenna and Alison, giving us a big lift off the bench,” said Head Coach Joe Legerski. “At times, we need to be a little crisper on offensive but I can never fault the effort. Tremendous effort by a young team that is learning every day.”
Wyoming is currently tied for third in the conference with UNLV. Colorado State University is second and San Diego State University is in first place.
Woodward was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the second time on Monday after her performances over the last week. She averaged 18.5 points a game as she led Wyoming to victory over Texas Christian University and UNLV.
The Cowgirls’ next game will be Saturday in the Arena Auditorium as they take on The University of New Mexico.
