I am a student; a 3.9 GPA pre-med based student—a physiology major with an emphasis on neuroscience medicine to be more exact. I took this job as sports editor of the Branding Iron because I am an avid sports fan and it would be a new learning experience. Qualifications? I got this job because of my reputation of hard work, dedication, enthusiasm and good grades.
Recently, my friend at a Wyoming daily newspaper has brought into question everything about me. I will not use any names because I do not want to publicly attack them, like they did me. The basketball game Tuesday night was a blowout, a good win for the University of Wyoming. After the game my friend showed me a tweet posted by one of the “professional” journalists from the Star-Tribune because he was curious if it was about me. It read:
“Hey student ‘journalist:’ Nice work snagging free pizza on press row from a cheerleader heading to fans. Also, nice backwards hat.”
Sure enough, this was about me, directed from a guy who I have no idea who he is. However, I have read his articles trying to learn from them, because he is a good writer. The incident he is talking about was when the cheerleaders did the “pizza run” where they run around the stadium giving away free pizza. I am pretty good friends with the cheerleaders and one of them dropped one off at my press seat. As soon as I got it, I knew of a family that is of low income that I eventually ended up giving the pizza to. Did the sports writer know this? No. Why? He never asked. Good job of reporting.
The comment about my backwards hat I can only assume was an attack on my “class” or “professionalism.” Using social media to publicly criticize someone is so much more professional. A mentor would have been nice, I already have plenty of critics.
Later, when the cheerleaders were tossing T-shirts into the crowd, he tweeted:
“Oh good, they brought out some free T-shirts. Student ‘journalist’ woke back up. #stayclassy.”
Ah, classy. Hypocritical don’t you think? Let me reiterate this, I have never met this guy. I have read his articles because he is a good writer, but he knows nothing about me. This is your career so you should know professional etiquette.
Another professional sports reporter chimed in with his tweets. Now this is a guy I have a ton of respect for and always have. He is a great writer and has written many complimentary articles about me during my high school sports. I was shocked to see him act this way. Tweeting things such as:
“Pulling info from UW release doesn’t make you working media.”
If they want to attack my work then fine, I do not care because I am a beginning journalist, just like they were at one time. I am constantly learning, even reading their columns to learn. Is it fair for them to judge me because I had a hat on backwards? This is the perfect example of our country today, very judgmental. I am positive that if either had sat down and talked with me, they would have been shocked that I am not who they think I am because I have a backwards hat on. Sure, maybe wearing the hat was unprofessional, but this could have been handled differently. A good journalist observes things, yes, I will give him that. A good journalist also asks questions.
They jumped to a conclusion and attacked me on Twitter, highly unprofessional. I think they have a word for that in this industry called libel, but at the very least unethical. Very frowned upon by most papers. You guys are great writers, you know that, I know that, everyone knows that, no need to establish your Alpha Male presence.
People that are happy with their job are able to have fun while working. I go to the sporting events and have a good time. I love my job, so much that I have debated changing majors. However, if this is what “professional” journalists are like then screw it, I don’t want to be a journalist. I am not a journalist and am proud to say so.
Using the newspaper to reply to a “twitter attack” is very immature and does not need to be in the Branding Iron.
Weird, looks like it’s in the Branding Iron. Freedom of Press get over it.

Get over it. Do you have any ideas how many times the BI has trashed students?!
Also…..even if you are not a journalist, learn proper grammar.
It’s called a typo, it’s not like he did it on purpose. It is college paper so mistakes are going to happen. Here is some proper grammar for you though Mr. Guest: YOU’RE A DOUCHE BAG. :) (Yes, I typed that in all caps because I’m ready to unleash the fury.)
Despite my finding of this article to be exceptionally immature, it is the second line that prompts my objection. You are the sports editor of a newspaper. Even if that newspaper is only student run, you should not deny the fact that you are in fact, quite blatantly, pretending to be a journalist.
