The Wyoming Cowgirls (16-5, 6-2) five game winning streak was snapped Wednesday night as they fell to the BYU Cougars, 73-48, in Provo. The Cowgirls now sit at second in the Mountain West Conference standings. In the rarest of occasions senior forward Hillary Carlson was held scoreless throughout the entire game, shooting 0-7 from the field and not even visiting the free throw line. “BYU executed very well offensively and shot the ball well on their home floor,” said head coach Joe Legerski in his postgame news conference. “Chaundra and Aubrey stepped up and kept us in the game in the first half, and played hard for all 40 minutes. I’m pleased to be 6-2 at this point in time, but we have a great deal of work ahead of us during the second half of the conference season.” In just their second conference loss of the season the Cowgirls had no answers for BYU, especially in the paint. The score at the halfway point was 28-22 in favor of the Cougars and but Wyoming was eventually overwhelmed in the second half. It was a tough shooting night for the Cowgirls overall as they shot 34 percent from the field, just 18.8 percent from three-point range, and 60 percent from the charity stripe. The Cougars went 47 percent from the field and from three-point land, and didn’t make either of their only two free throws attempted. They had 34 points in the paint to Wyoming’s 18, and 24 bench points to the Cowgirls’ 12. The largest lead of the game, a game in which Wyoming never led, came at the 2:05 mark in the second half when 6’7” freshman center Jennifer Hamson, who is also on BYU’s volleyball team, made her fifth and sixth points of the game to put the Cougars up by 27. Senior guard Aubrey Vandiver was tops for the Cowgirls with 16 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Chaundra Sewell added 14 points and seven rebounds. The rest of the team scored a total of seven points. BYU (15-7, 7-1) was led by senior forward Coriann Fraughton who notched 19 points for the Cougars. The only other BYU player in double figures was senior guard Haley Hall, who totaled 11 points and added seven rebounds. Wyoming will look to bounce back in Fort Collins on Saturday as they take on the Rams in another big conference showdown. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. Email the author: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it |
