A passenger, Elking, was shot in the back by one of the robbers. The driver took Elking to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A bullet entered her chest, causing serious injury.

The St. Charles Police Department has issued a news statement stating that two male juveniles, aged 16 and 17, have been charged with second-degree murder, assault, robbery, and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Lydia Elking. The two accused were arrested the following day.
Their identities are being concealed because they are minors. Reportedly, on February 18, 2023, on Oak Avenue and Perry Street, east of Lindenwood University‘s campus in St. Charles, a 17-year-old male told authorities that he and Lydia were going to meet two guys.

St. Charles police said that as Lydia and the 17-year-old boy arrived at the agreed-upon meeting spot, two additional adolescents approached the car on foot and proclaimed a robbery. One of the thieves fired a revolver into the car, striking her in the passenger seat. When Lydia’s companion finally got her to St. Joseph’s Hospital, she was already dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

It was around 8:50 p.m. when St. Charles police were called to the hospital. As murder police asked for the public’s help in searching the area, they found two adolescents who had piqued their curiosity. As the investigation continues, the suspects have been taken into custody and lodged in the St. Charles County Detention Center.
