An Indian Air Force helicopter went down in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday, taking with it a total of thirteen persons, including the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, and his wife, Madhulika. The Prime Minister of India, along with other politicians from throughout the country and the world, has conveyed his sorrow over this disaster.

Social work and volunteer work were two of Madhulika Rawat’s many interests outside of her role as head of the Army Wives Welfare Association.

A Glimpse Into Her Career as a Social Activist

She worked for an organisation that looked out for the welfare of the dependents of military soldiers. She was also involved with a number of welfare groups that were aiming to assist women who had lost their husbands or partners in military service.

She worked toward the goal of giving career opportunities for the spouses of military personnel by encouraging them to pursue various courses in tailoring, knitting bag, and making bakery products.

She worked toward this goal for many years. Previously, she was the head of the Army Women’s Welfare Association and served as president (AWWA). She was given the role of President of the Defence Wives Welfare Association in 2021 after being chosen for the position (DWWA).

At several of the conferences and functions that Madhulika Rawat attended, she had the position of chief guest.

Personal Life Details of Madhulika Rawat

Her father, Mrighendra Singh, held the position of Riyasatdar of the Sohagpur Riyasat in the Shadol district of the Madhya Pradesh state. In 1967 and 1972, he represented Shadol in Congress as a Member of the Local Assembly.

She is the second child to be born to her parents, and she has one sibling who is older than she is and one who is younger. Her brother Yashwardhan Singh Rawat is one of her siblings. In the year 2021, her family moved into their ancestral home, which is known as “Rajabagh,” located in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh.

She was married to Bipin Rawat, who served as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff. The happy couple tied the knot on April 14th, 1986. Both Kritika Rawat and Tarini Rawat were the couple’s daughters.

What Was the Reason of Her Death?

The Mi-17 V5 she was riding in crashed at Wellington Army Centre in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on the 8th of December 2021, while she was in route from Delhi to Sulur.

Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitendra Kumar, Lieutenant Naik Vivek Kumar, Lieutenant Naik B Sai Teja, and Havildar Satpal were her PSOs in the helicopter along with Bipin Rawat, Brigadier L.S. Lidder (defence assistant to the CDS), Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh (special officer to the CDS), and Lieutenant General Harjinder Singh.

The Indian Air Force later tweeted that Madhulika, her husband Bipin Rawat, and eleven others had been killed in a helicopter crash in the Tamil Nadu town of Coonoor. Only Group Captain Varun Singh made it out of the crash alive.

His physicians had said that he was critical but stable until Tuesday and on Wednesday the IAF tweeted:

Her husband, Bipin Rawat, was cremated with full military honours at the Brar Square crematorium at Delhi cantonment on December 10, 2021. Madhulika’s body was also put on the same pyre.

What Did TS Singh Deo Commented on the Death?

A politician from Chhattisgarh, TS Singh Deo, commented on the deaths of Madhulika and Bipin Rawat, saying,

Madhulika Rawat was a close family associate and used to visit us in Bhopal often. Madhulika ji, wife of Late Gen Bipin Rawat was a close family associate. She was the daughter of Late Shri Mrigendra Singh ji of Suhagpur (MP) and used to visit us often in Bhopal. My heart goes out to their families. May they find strength to deal with this unimaginable loss.”
