Payton Michael Pritchard is a professional basketball player from the United States who currently competes for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association. The Oregon Ducks were his collegiate team, and he was a star player for them. In the Pac-12, he was honored with a spot on the second team of all-conference players while he was a sophomore. After being declared an ESPN.com top pick in August 2015, Payton committed to the University of Oregon Ducks. His father Terry played college football at Oklahoma, and he had previously decided to follow in his footsteps and play for the Sooners.
Professional Career
Payton was selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft as the 26th overall pick. He signed a four-year Rookie Contract for $10.5 million with the Celtics. On December 15th, 2020, Payton made his first appearance for the team, scoring 17 points in the preseason against the Philadelphia 76ers. In a 126-114 victory over the Toronto Raptors on January 4th, 2021, he had a career-high 23 points, 8 assists, and 2 rebounds.
In the following game, Payton made a game-winning layup against the Miami Heat to help his team win 107-105. While playing against the Detroit Pistons, Payton had his first NBA start but had a disappointing effort with 2 points in 28 minutes and a loss on the board. Payton struggled with his impactful performance because it came so early in the competition. On April 27th, 2021, he went on a career-high scoring spree against the Oklahoma City Thunder, finishing with 28 points.
