While numbers decrease for the nation, Wyoming numbers are still higher
Throughout the U.S. teen pregnancy rates have fallen; however, Wyoming still has a higher teen pregnancy rate than the average according to statistics.
Wyoming has a higher teen birth rate compared to the national numbers, according to data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The teen birth rate of 15- to 19-year-olds was 46.5 births per 1,000 teens in 2007, up from 39.7 per 1,000 teens in 2002, according to the foundation.
Executive Director of the Wyoming Health Council Lucy Williamson said that Wyoming has a problem with sex education. She said parents expect schools to teach sex education, and schools expect parents to teach their children sex education.
“Nobody is talking about it. That’s not good,” she said.
Deputy Director of the Wyoming Health Council Susie Markus said the state should do more about teen pregnancy. She said the state does not mandate that schools teach comprehensive sex education. Wyoming has additional challenges to overcome, Markus added. She said in a rural and culturally conservative place like Wyoming, it is naturally harder to get access to contraception. Markus said it’s also harder to talk about contraception and safe sex in Wyoming.
Markus said that teenagers want to talk about sex education and relationships. Markus said that she went around in 2009 and 2010 and talked to college students about sex education and relationships. She said college students just wanted to know about relationships and safe sex education. Markus said very few talked to these students about safe sex and just told them simply not to have sex. She said if the students found themselves in a relationship and then wanted to have sex, they felt guilty about it.
Markus said there are programs in Wyoming to help parents and teens talk about sex, and to help with access to contraception. She said the Wyoming Health Council has several resources at their website, http://www.wyhc.org
Nationally, teen pregnancy rates are down in the US in every racial and ethnic group, according to a new study released by by Kathryn Krost and Stanley Henshaw of the Guttmacher Institute.
The birth rate was the lowest in almost 40 years, according to the study.
The rate in 2008 was 67.8 pregnancies per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 to 19. The study said the rate in 1990 was 116.9 pregnancies per 1,000 teens, which is a 42 percent drop.
The teen birthrate also dropped 35 percent between 1991 and 2008, where it went from 61.8 births per 1,000 teens to 40.2 births per 1,000 teens, according to the study. The study also said the abortion rate in 1988 was 43.5 abortions per 1,000 teens, and dropped 59 percent to 17.8 abortions per 1,000 teens in 2008.
The study also found differences in rates between certain ethnic groups. The rate of teen pregnancy dropped 37 percent for Hispanics, fell 48 percent for blacks, and had a 50 percent drop for non-Hispanic whites, according to the study. The study said the rate of teen pregnancy for blacks and Hispanics are almost three times the rate for non-Hispanic whites. The abortion rate for Hispanic teens was twice as much as non-Hispanic whites, and the abortion rate for black teens was four times as much as non-Hispanic whites, the study said.
