College groups bring poetry, stepping to campus

With panel discussions and speeches occurring all week, Students Activities Council and Friday Night Fever have teamed up to provide the leisure for Days of Dialogue.

Two of the events throughout the week are The P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. Club Steppers and slam poet, Slam Nuba.

The P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. Club Steppers will perform at 8 p.m. tonight in the A&S Auditorium.

“SAC and FNF like to contribute more to the entertainment aspect of the week,” Stephanie Long, the graduate assistant for SAC, said. “Last year we brought a dance group from Denver, and we kind of wanted to continue with the performance theme.”

The P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. Club Steppers got together in the Bronx, N.Y., and they have performed at the White House, for BET, Alicia Keys and Usher.

The acronym P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. stands for Participating in the Lives Among Youth to Educate and Restore Society, and showcases one of the reasons this group was chosen for Days of Dialogue.

“They have never been to campus before, so this is a totally unprecedented performance,” Long said.

Slam Nuba is also coming to Laramie to put on a slam poetry workshop and host on open mic event.

Slam Nuba is a collection of poets based in Denver that originated in 2006.

They won the National Poetry Slam in Massachusetts in 2011. Slam Nuba is also endorsed by Slam Poetry, inc.

Nuba’s workshop will be Friday at noon in the Union West Ballroom. The open mic will follow at 1:15 p.m. in the Skylight Lounge.

“Slam Nuba is coming to do a slam poetry workshop,” Long said. That would be a great place to prepare for the SAC slam poetry competition which is next week on Wednesday, she added.

For those wanting to take what they’ve learned in the slam poetry workshop to a competitive level, the Union will be sending the top two slam poets to a regional competition in Colorado Springs, Colo.

For that slam poetry competition, competitors must be UW students, create their own original work and it has to be under three minutes.
