The exhibit, which showcases service-oriented photos, runs Jan. 17–Jan. 25. The reception is scheduled to be part of the UW Martin Luther King Days of Dialogue event happening throughout this week. The MLK Days of Dialogue features several events, including a keynote speaker, that take place across campus.
Kate Steiner, UW interim assistant dean of students and MLK DOD organizer, said the exhibit contains five different photo sets taken by five people. The photographers took all the photos during service trips to locations such as Mexico, Kenya and India, Steiner said. The photographers include UW faculty, staff and students, she said.
The exhibit ties in with the MLK Days of Dialogue by relating to MLK’s mission of “bringing about social justice,” Steiner said. The photographers will be present for the reception so that people can meet them, she said. The reception is free and open to the public.
Sarah Brown, Gallery 234 coordinator, said in a press release: “The exhibition will showcase photographs taken on service trips in which University of Wyoming community members have donated their time and efforts. The gallery exhibition and reception will celebrate the efforts of members from our own community who are giving back on a global scale.”
This year marks the eighth annual MLK March and Days of Dialogue. “The week of special activities serves as a renewal of UW’s commitment to making campus a more welcoming and empowering place for people from different backgrounds, heritages, orientations or abilities,” according to the MLK Days of Dialogue website.
In addition to the gallery reception, upcoming events for the MLK Days of Dialogue week include a poetry slam workshop and open mic with Slam Nuba; “Art Imitates Life” panel discussion; motivational speaker, Chad Hymas and a keynote address given by Hill Harper.
