Women defeat UNM

The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. Saturday where they defeated the Lady Lobos of the University of New Mexico 52–50.

The Cowgirls were led by a dominant performance from junior Chaundra Sewell who had 26 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Ashley Sickles also notched double digits with 10 points.

The Cowgirls responded in the second half after trailing by eight at intermission. The team achieved its first lead of the game on a Sewell three–point play in the final two minutes of the game with a score of 49–47.

Sewell added one more three–point play on the next possession to give the Cowgirls 52 points. On the last play of the game, with the score 52–50, Sewell blocked a game–winning shot attempted by New Mexico to secure the victory for UW.

“Chaundra (Sewell) answered the call in this game,” Head Coach Joe Legerski said. “She made big plays on both ends of the floor.”

The Cowgirls will return to action Wednesday when they host the Lady Falcons of the Air Force Academy. The game is set for 7 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
