The Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Community Pharmacists Association will give Laramie residence an opportunity to properly dispose of their expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs Saturday.
The Laramie Police Department and the DEA will host their third Drug Take-Back 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. Police Officer Christopher Cleven said anyone can drop their unwanted or expired prescriptions off at Express Pharmacy located at 4005 E. Grand Ave.
He also said the service is completely free and anonymous. Director of the Drug Information Center Melisa Hunter said members of NCPA will mark off the names on the labels of prescription medications.
NCPA will host an additional drug take-back 7–11 a.m. in the Union Ballroom. Hunter said Drug Take-Back will be part of a larger health fair. Collected drugs at both take-back locations are sent to Salt Lake City for incineration.
Almost 740 different types of medications were returned for proper disposal, Hunter said.
Hunter said it is important to properly dispose of expired drugs, because they can be hazardous to the health of infants and could potentially be abused by others.
Flushing the drugs down the toilet does not solve the problem because it can contaminate the sewers, Cleven said.
“If the drug is not going to be used, bring it by,” Hunter said.
