Wyoming wrestlers ‘blank’ South Dakota State PDF Print E-mail

The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team showed Laramie what it means to win at home this weekend with two dominating conference dual victories.


Friday night, the grapplers blanked South Dakota State 49-0. The night consisted of two forfeits, four

The Cowboys went 2-0 on the weekend, also beating North Dakota State 35-3 Sunday. They won 19 of 20 matches in the two wins and improved to 4-0 in the WWC and 9-4 overall. -Zach Spadt

pins, one major decision, and three decisions for the Cowboys. They won all ten matches.

Among the Cowboy wins, 197-pound L.J. Helbig, No. 18 ranked 149-pound Cole Dallaserra, 157-pound Jimmy Belleville, and No.  4 ranked 165-pound Shane Onufer all pinned their opponents. 

Patrick Martinez won a 16-4 major decision to finish the night for the Cowboys.

After that impressive performance, the Cowboys attempted to match that effort Sunday afternoon, and nearly did. Wyoming bested North Dakota State 35-3.

The Cowboys host Air Force Thursday night in Laramie, and it is their last home dual of the season. 

One short of their 10-win performance on Friday night, the Cowboys won nine of 10 against the Bison. 

Onufer continued to cement his place among the best in the country, improving his record to 23-0 and beating Steve Monk by a 5-1 decision. 

No. 5 Joe LeBlanc won a 20-4 technical fall over Tyler Wells at 184-pounds.

Other wins for the Cowboys included No. 18 Michael Martinez defeating No. 17 Trent Sprenkle by a 3-1 decision, Tyler Cox winning 18-2 technical fall, and Chase Smith winning a 3-1 decision in his 141-pound match.

The Cowboys improved to 9-4 in duals and 4-0 in WWC play. 

They will host Air Force in their final home dual of the season this Thursday.
