My article last week entitled “College of Education fails to educate” has created a great deal of controversy.  I want to apologize for the offensive tone used in the article. I have received numerous emails from educators across the state. These emails describe smart, dedicated teachers who have changed children’s lives.

I did not do these teachers justice. I do believe that teaching is one of the hardest professions. I know that there are many great teachers, and many people go into teaching because they have a real love for children. These great teachers were not the educators that I wanted to point fingers at in the article.

My point was simply that the education department attracts unmotivated students because it is seen on campus as an easy major. Because so many teachers in this state graduate from the college of education, changing the education department could eliminate many of these unmotivated students. If the college of education could become a school that attracted the best and most motivated students, then the entire education system in the state would change.
