She enrolled at Stanford University in 1951, initially planning to study medicine but ultimately deciding to double-major in political science and history. After finishing her undergraduate degree in 1955, she interned for a San Francisco nonprofit called the Coro Foundation, whose mission was to give young people opportunities to gain political experience through internships.
She wed Jack Berman in 1956, and the two had a daughter together who went on to become a judge. They divorced in 1959. After dating for three years, she finally met and married Bertram Feinstein in 1974. She tied the knot with Richard C. Blum in 1980, and the couple remained together until they died in 2022.
