In addition to her three young children and devastated husband, Natalie Wood left behind a remarkable acting record when she drowned in the waters off Santa Catalina Island 41 years ago.

How Many Times Did He Marry?

San Francisco native Wood was married to the late composer Richard Wagner. The couple exchanged their initial “I dos” on January 3, 1957, just three days after Christmas. Audiences had already been introduced to Wood through his roles in successful films like Miracle on 34th Street and Rebel Without a Cause.

It was April of 1962 when Wagner and Wood decided to end their relationship. In episode three of her podcast The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood, Lana Wood claims that her sister Lindsay Wagner found him “in a romantic rendezvous with another man.” This discovery led to their separation and eventual divorce, she says.

After their divorce, Wagner went on to marry Have Gun Will Travel star Marion Marshall. Heavily stated that after Wood’s “notoriously tumultuous” relationship with Warren Beatty, her co-star in Splendor in the Grass, she married scriptwriter Richard Gregson.

Each couple had a single child. By 1971’s summer, they had divorced for the second time. “RJ” and “Nat” remarried after their second divorce, which occurred ten years after their first. A daughter, Courtney Brooke Wagner, was born to them on March 9, 1974, in Los Angeles.

While Wood and Wagner’s 60-foot power cruiser, Splendour, sailed the Mediterranean, the story revealed that despite employing a full-time cook, Wood frequently prepared Russian dishes. The suspicious circumstances surrounding Wood’s death are thus once again front and centre.

Sometime after Woods’s passing, Wagner began dating actress Jill St. John. They met in 1984 and married in 1990.

A Glimpse Into His Acting Career

Although he did not earn any credit for his first role, it was in the 1950 picture “The Happy Years.” 20th Century Fox signed him when he was just 20 years old. Halls of Montezuma (1942) marked the beginning of his acting career at Fox (1951). Richard Widmark starred alongside Wagner.

Once he established himself in supporting roles, he was offered lead roles in films including “Below the 12-Mile Reef,” “Prince Valiant,” “A Kiss Before Dying,” and “Between Heaven and Hell” in 1953. His breakthrough Western “Broken Lance” came out in 1954 and catapulted him to fame.

In 1961, Wagner and Wood set out on their own to form a production firm that they would call Rona Productions. Directed by Wagner and starring Steve McQueen, “The War Lover” was filmed on location in England during 1962.

His appearance as Alexander Mundy on the popular TV series “To Catch a Thief” in the late 1960s was the first of three that would cement his status as a genuine star. The show was a huge hit over its three seasons on ABC (1968–1970). In this film he made his triumphant return alongside Fred Astaire.

He then went on to play the title role of Pete Ryan in another successful television series in the mid-1970s. In the 1970s, he was a breakout star on the hit television series “Hart to Hart.” In the 1990s, he made a comeback as Dr. Evil’s assistant in the “Austin Powers” films. Over the years, he’s had guest appearances on shows including Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Two and a Half Men, Hustle, and NCIS, among many others.

Why Was Robert Wagner Blamed for Natalie Wood’s Death?

Natalie Wood drowned on Catalina Island on November 29, 1981, while visiting the boat Splendour. The Splendour’s crew included Wagner, Christopher Walken, and captain Dennis Davern. There was never an explanation for why Walken’s wife Georgianne didn’t come along on the trip.

Wagner says that when he went to bed, he didn’t wake up because Wood had disappeared. According to the autopsy report, Wood had a blood alcohol content of 0.14%, abrasions on her cheek, and bruises all over her body and arms, as well as two different medications, one for motion sickness and one for pain.

Wagner claims in his autobiography, “Pieces of My Heart,” that he and Wood fought right before she vanished. After midnight, two people on a nearby boat said they heard a woman screaming for help. The coroner in Los Angeles County ruled that she committed suicide by drowning.

Case reopened after boat captain Davern publicly stated in November 2011 that he saw Wood and Wagner arguing that night and admitted to lying to police during initial investigation.

Upon learning that Wood was flirting with Walken, Wagner allegedly went into a rage and refused to let Davern contact the police when Wood went missing. Davern believed that Wagner was responsible for Wood’s death.

In February of 2018, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department named Wagner a person of interest in their investigation into Wood’s death. Meanwhile, Wagner has consistently denied guilt. After Natalie’s death, Wagner took in her 11-year-old daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner.
