After learning the ropes from Mexican wrestler Jose Lothario, Hickenbottom got his start in the ring with the National Wrestling Alliance in 1984. Before making his debut with the WWF in 1987, he competed for a while in Texas All-Star Wrestling and the American Wrestling Association.
At the time, Shawn was working with Marty Jannetty as half of their band The Midnight Rockers. In the end, The Midnight Rockers were kicked out of the WWF after a “incident” at a bar, and they ended up back in the AWA.
