Is the 5th season of Star Trek: Discovery a flop?

Star Trek: Discovery, Paramount+’s main Star Trek series, will return for season 5, and here’s all we know about the return of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery. Star Trek: Discovery is one of five new Star Trek programs available on Paramount+, which also includes Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy. In 2022, all five Star Trek series will stream new episodes, a first for the beloved 55-year-old sci-fi franchise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 broke new ground by focusing less on the action and more on a season-long threat to the United Federation of Planets known as the Dark Matter Anomaly, which forced Burnham and the USS Discovery to cross the Galactic Barrier into a completely new galaxy.

Discovery made First Contact with Species 10-C, the alien designers of the DMA, to save Earth from impending disaster. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 introduced new characters such as Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) and mad scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle), while also focusing on the romantic relationships between Burnham and Book (David Ajala), Saru (Doug Jones) and President T’Rina (Tara Rosling), as well as the trials of Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), who served as the ship’s

Star Trek: Discovery is set in the distant future of the 32nd century, over 700 years ahead of Star Trek: Picard season 2’s 25th-century timeline. As such, the show has the luxury of constantly redefining Star Trek and creating new canon. Now that Burnham and her crew have once again rescued the galaxy, here is the season 5 status of Star Trek: Discovery.

Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery was officially renewed for a fifth season by Paramount+ on January 18, 2022. With the completion of its fifth season, Discovery becomes the longest-running new Star Trek series since Star Trek: Voyager concluded its seven-season run in 2001 due to the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise after season four. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will also consist of ten episodes, making it the series’ smallest season to yet. However, Discovery’s 10-episode season 5 order aligns it with the rest of Paramount+’s Star Trek series, which also have 10-episode seasons (except Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, which has a 20 episode order).

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Release Date Suggestions

Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery has not yet commenced production as of March 2022. Season two is continuing in the screenplay and preparation stages. As was the case with season 4, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will almost certainly be filmed under strict COVID-19 guidelines, which slow down filming to guarantee the safety of the cast and crew. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 production is likely to extend until the remainder of 2022, with new episodes not streaming on Paramount+ until mid-to-late 2023.

Season 5 Cast and Story Updates for Star Trek: Discovery

The whole ensemble of Star Trek: Discovery, including Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, and David Ajala, is anticipated to return for season 5. Lt. Sylvia Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman, left Discovery to teach at Starfleet Academy but is expected to return, as are Chelah Horsdal’s President Rillak, Oded Fehr’s Admiral Charles Vance, Tara Rosling’s President T’Rina, and Ian Alexander’s Gray Tal. Discovery boasts a sizable ensemble, and even characters considered dead, such as Shawn Doyle’s Dr. Tarka, may make a surprise return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Each season of Star Trek: Discovery has featured a season-long threat, and season 5 may be no exception. The season 4 finale of Star Trek: Discovery did not finish on a cliffhanger, but Burnham intimated that there was much more of the 32nd century to explore. It’s probable that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will follow season 4’s lead and adopt the more philosophical tone of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, allowing Captain Burnham to pursue new lifeforms and new civilizations in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.
