Following the conclusion of season 5, fans of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom can anticipate additional content from the series. This is how they will seem on the big screen following the adaptations of three additional novels.
Season 5 of The Last Kingdom has concluded on Netflix, but the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon) has at least one more act to tell. Each season of The Last Kingdom has usually adapted two novels from Bernard Cornwell’s historical fiction book series, The Saxon Stories.
By the show’s completion, only ten of the show’s thirteen novels had been incorporated; nevertheless, there is still further source material awaiting an on-screen adaptation — which audiences will certainly experience.
The Last Kingdom premiered on the BBC in 2015 and was picked up by Netflix for season three in 2018. Uhtred’s journey to retrieve his ancestral heritage is chronicled in the series. Uhtred, born a Saxon but raised as a Dane, struggled with his dual identity throughout the show’s five seasons until accomplishing his goal and fulfilling his destiny.
Uhtred attempted but was failed, to restore peace amid severe hostilities between the Saxons and Danes in the medieval Anglo-Saxon realms through alliances, betrayals, and numerous epic wars.
Uhtred eventually reclaimed his ancestral land of Bebbanburg in the final episode of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom, ascending to the post of Lord of Northumbria, who would rule independently of King Edward. Even though the series’ conclusion was gratifying, the emergence of Uhtred’s estranged third child and Edward’s unyielding goal for a unified England imply that there is more to come and that Uhtred’s newfound authority will not be without consequences.
The conclusion of Uhtred’s saga is currently under development, which is excellent news for fans. To conclude The Last Kingdom’s storyline, Netflix will release a feature film titled Seven Kings Must Die in 2019.
Season 6 of The Last Kingdom: Coming or Not?
Even though the source material for The Last Kingdom stretches beyond season 5, Netflix chose not to renew the series. However, the streaming service has not explained why The Last Kingdom would end after its fifth season, although it appears that this has been the objective from the start.
Alexander Dreymon stated at the MCM London Comic Con in 2021 that the production team of The Last Kingdom “had planned the program in such a way that season five was always supposed to be the final season,” basing the show’s narrative on the ten Saxon Stories novels released since 2016.
Season 6 of The Last Kingdom: Story
Instead of a sixth season of The Last Kingdom, Netflix has chosen to adopt the remaining books in Cornwell’s series into feature films rather than television episodes. On January 31, The Last Kingdom’s official Twitter account announced that filming for Seven Kings Must Die has commenced. The film will run for around two hours and thirty minutes.
While Netflix has not yet released an official synopsis, Seven Kings Must Die will be based on the final three Saxon Stories novels: War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings, and War Lord, which is now in development. At this point, no details regarding the actors have been published, though Alexander Dreymon has been reported to reprise his role as Uhtred. Netflix has not yet set a release date for the picture, but the studio has stated that it will arrive in the first half of 2023.
