Zimmer was born in Seattle, Washington, to parents who immigrated from former East Prussia. She speaks fluent German, stating in a 2015 interview that, even though her parents talked English with her as a child, she spent six weeks of each summer in Germany with her grandmother, who spoke exclusively German. Zimmer decided to pursue a career in acting after falling in love with the craft during her senior year of high school. She was accepted to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena following high school.
