The End of the F***ing World spoilers follow.
The first season of The End of the F***ing World was a huge hit with both the general public and the general public’s wife.
Charlie Covell, who adapted the film from Charles Forsman’s graphic novel of the same name, believes that this is due to one important point. “There’s a lot of stuff going on,” he says.
“I can’t take credit for Alyssa and James’ fame because they were created by Chuck,” she said in an interview with The i. We can see them as two broken teens who are simply trying to connect, and we can empathize with that.” “There’s something about the gap between the image they present and who they are that makes them recognizable to the audience.”
“It’s especially noticeable with Alyssa. “I wish I had been as brave and self-assured, as well as having the capacity to be disrespectful and not give a damn.”
Despite the series’ enormous popularity, several viewers felt that it should not be renewed for a second season, let alone for a third.
Storylines may and can be continued indefinitely – they may come to an end, but they are not necessarily finished – and while the first chapter might have easily been left as a standalone, the decision was made to bring it back.
Writer Charlie Covell told Digital Spy, “In all honesty, we thought about it as a single entity.” We constantly consider how to go with something, but I believe the way we discussed the second season was as follows: if the first season is about running away, the second season is about returning and dealing with the consequences of your actions.
“It’s that transition from adolescence to adulthood.” It sounds pretentious, but I think it’s more of a reaction to season one than just another season where they do crazy stuff. Because I don’t think resetting characters and letting them do the same thing is right for the story.”
“You’re like, ‘F**k, I’ve got to go home.’” I must organize my life. I can’t run.
“An ending is an ending.” After the wedding, there’s the divorce, the kids, whatever. You have all those options.
“I think an end is where a story ends. If you keep going, that ending becomes the start of something new.”
Season two, according to Alex Lawther (James), was a necessity.
« Season one is almost a big question, » he told us. So when Charlie said we’d look into the fallout of season one and the consequences of these young people’s lives… That made sense.
It was about answering the question, “What happens next?” “What do you have when all of this happens?”
“I was worried James would be a ghost or in flashbacks, like in A Christmas Carol,” Lawther told NME when told he’d be needed for season two.
And Jessy Barden agreed to return.
“Why wouldn’t you want to do it again if people like it?” she told Digital Spy.
“It’s still the same two people.” It’s still about the same two people. They’re not wholly different people. In a sense, yes. “They’re still tricky.”
Covell told The I that Forsman “really liked it.”
“It helped me relax,” she added.
The entire series is currently available to stream on All4 in the UK and Netflix in the US.

Ahead of the season two debut, Covell, who is presently working on a new Netflix program called Kaos, had doubts about bringing it back.
“I doubt you’ll get another series,” she told the journalists. “I think it’s occasionally nice to just halt things, and I hope you agree.”
The end is near, and I think you can push it. Sorry.”
“I don’t think you should retain something beyond its natural life,” she said, without ruling it out.
I’m not sure if it’s right to see more because we met them as elderly teenagers and now we’re taking them into maturity.” hmm Let’s see. “Never say never, but I think it’s healthy to get out now and again.”
“We had an excellent idea the other day, so I wouldn’t say never,” said someone else. But…
“We could do it like Boyhood,” Covell said.
“Yes!” Barden exclaimed. “I believe we should do that.”
Covell laughed, “Can we afford you?”
“I’m probably going to be like, ‘Oh my God, why am I an actress?’” Barden answered. A year at most.’”
To which Covell said, “I have a feeling probably not,” in July at the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards.
“I think it’s preferable to quit shows like that when they’re at their peak” (it picked up two awards for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress for Naomi Ackie). Having a second season as successful as the first makes us all extremely proud.
We’ll know, but I’m glad we left them where we did.
That said because season one came out in October 2017 and the second in November 2019, it’s hard to tell when season three will arrive. Especially when a third season would be much further away.
COVID also complicates filming.
The End of the F***ing World season 3 cast: Who’s in it?
Barden and Lawther would need to be on board for future episodes because the show would be without Alyssa and James.
“It just wouldn’t work,” Barden says (via the Guardian). That’s what the program is — Alyssa and James together.
They told NME they’d love to reunite on TEOTFW or another project (we hope both!).
“I’d love to portray a female Joker,” Barden says. “I want to be a psycho.”
I could play Harly Quinn and you the Joker,” Lawther suggested.
After the show’s international success, both actors are busy with their own projects, so reuniting the gang could be difficult.
