It’s market day at Casa Del Nino, the school we are volunteering at. The kids came dressed in traditional Guatemalan garb, and bearing food. Parents and grand-parents were there buying tickets to later exchange with the kids for their goods. Naturally, we participated, each of us buying something different so we could snag a little taste of everything. There was an extremely wide variety, with everything from fried plantains to avocado burgers. Market day was a small fundraiser for the school. Our entire group of thirteen might have contributed fifty quetzales (the local currency), which is a little over six US dollars. Although six American dollars goes a long way in Guatemala.

Speaking of the group, I should introduce you to the crazy cast of characters which accompanied me on this trip. There is Cat, a quiet girl that is very observative. You can tell that she is carefully examining everything that is happening, every person she meets, and every child she talks to. Then we have Laura, she chose to study French in school, so like me her choice for a foreign language was not very helpful here. Brianna is a first year, second semester, Spanish student. She is very inquisitive, constantly asking how to say certain phrases in Spanish.
I have learned to eavesdrop on her questions in order to learn myself. Although Bri does not seem to have any problems connecting with the kids. As we were leaving Market day, a little girl would not let Bri go. Shuping is our international student. She is from China, and is probably the most adorable one of the cast. Shuping is constantly beaming and always excited to be with us. If you speak to her, her face just lights up. She is always trailing behind us, because she is always stopping to take pictures of everything. Megan is a tall girl from Cheyenne who is always cracking jokes. She has the best sense of direction out of all of us.
Whenever we are finding our way around Antigua, Megan is always in the front of the pack. Hope is one of out two uber fluent people. She is able to take charge and help all of us out while talking to each child individually. Every person she meets, she starts up a twenty minute conversation with them. Never missing a beat. I would not be surprised to find Hope living here in a few years. Taylor is the other fluent speaker/ She is a super tall leggy blond. So leggy that a few eleven year old boys tried to lift her leg over their heads yesterday and caused her to take a tumble. Justin is the only man on the trip. He is of course the strongest one here, which the children take advantage of as their own mobile jungle gym. Then we have two Mollys which the kids have distinguished by the color of their hair.
Red Molly is the artist of the pack. You can tell she is loving the colorful nature of the country, always looking for inspiration, and finding it everywhere. Black Molly is the most charismatic of the group. The children are just naturally drawn to her, and she is so good with them. Then we have our two trip leaders. Allison is an excited blond who has done her fair share of traveling before. She has been to third world countries before, and we love hearing the comparison between children in Guatemala and children in Kenya. Erin is a very bubbly character. She is our safety net, and always has us take the time to appreciate this trip and our experiences here.
