In the morning we were greeted with fresh fruit, pancakes, and the best coffee this traveler has ever tasted. After a luxurious breakfast, and one mishap with a very unfortunate fly in my coffee, we walked to the Maximo Nivel headquarters. Maximo Nivel is the non-profit agency we are volunteering through. They give us everything we could possibly need, and help us find our way around Antigua plus, even trickier, the bus system.

After a quick tour of the surrounding town we made our way back home for lunch with mamcita (our delightful host mom), then we decided to hike a volcano. Unfortunately, all of us Wyoming folk are used to hikes being easy walks through nature. I’ll thank Vedauwoo for the reason I was so unprepared for the torture sure to come. Once we hiked the first twenty feet up a ridiculously steep cobblestone path, we stopped to find out that the Pacaya Volcano was a steep 3 km hike. What made it even more of a struggle was the cobble stone path broke off into pure ashy sand and gravel.
Huffing and wheezing we made it slowly up the mountain, and I won’t lie to you, more than once I was thinking about just sitting down and waiting for the others to pick me up on their way down. Alas, the promise of a good view and roasting marsh mellows on top of the volcano was too much to pass up. The view at the top did in fact make it worth it. One quick stop to climb inside the volcano (just to clarify there was in fact a small cave you could climb in, hence inside the volcano. Get it?).
After we made it to the top we had to scale the side of the volcano to make it to the marsh mellow roasting spot. This proved to be just as tricky, if not more, than the entire way up. I’m not so sure a delicious gooey marsh mellow was worth falling over lava rocks, which had consistently grown in size towards the top.
The walk down was a lot more enjoyable, it was like hiking down a steep ashy sand dune. Although that meant that by the time I had gotten to the bottom, my shoes had collected quite a bit of the volcano. Ashy soot had managed to sneak its way not only into my shoes but my socks as well, which left quite a pile on my mamacita’s floor. That night, after turning the showers black, we all settled in, had dinner, and finished our night with a game and talking
