Cowboy wrestlers strong in weekend competition

This past weekend, the Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team showed their dominance as they beat the Utah Valley State Wolverines 36–6 and the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs 26–9.

Saturday, the Cowboys crushed non-conference opponent Utah Valley State by winning eight out of 10 matches.

Victories by Robert Stroh (149 pounds) and Andy McCulley (157) propelled the Cowboys to a lopsided victory over the Wolverines.

Despite the victories this weekend, head coach Mark Branch said the Cowboys were somewhat static in their performances this weekend.

“I thought we had some flat performances,” Branch said. “Some of those were wins, but I thought we had some really poor performances. We better get better before next Sunday.”

Friday marked the first time that the Pokes were victorious over the Cal Poly Mustangs in the history of the program.

Friday’s match started with Michael Martinez’s (125) major decision match victory that boosted the Cowboys to a 4–0 lead in front of a packed UniWyo sports complex building.

From there the Cowboys would not look back. Other wins included Shane Onufer’s (165) technical fall victory over Paul Woodman as well as Joe Leblanc (184) giving up 10 pounds to Ryan Smith as LeBlanc earned a major decision match 12–1.

“It all kind of worked, because we wanted to give Joe a tougher match,” Branch said. “We were working some different scenarios, depending on how the dual went, and we didn’t make any final decision until right there at the end.”

The Cowboys will return to action Friday in Laramie as they take on Northern Iowa at 2 p.m.
