The new building is 79,000 square feet and has large common areas, space for various student exhibitions and the Visiting Artists program, teaching studios and a large lecture room.
Students seemed to have positive first impressions of the new building. Art student Dakotah Konicek said he was blown away by the size of the center. “It is probably double or triple the size of the Fine Arts Building,” he said. He said Visual Arts is a significant improvement because students can more easily display work and have critiques. The only negative Konicek said he found was the building is a little far from campus. The new building is east of the Centennial Complex and Konicek said it can be quite a walk.
Another art major, Andrew Parker, praised the amount of space and said the Fine Arts building was dark and cramped. “It was like being in a dungeon over there,” he said.
Parker said the large amount of natural light in Visual Art is a good thing and he thinks the building will be very good for future students and programs. He said he liked having studios for students.
Parker also suggested it is now possible to have a Master’s program.
