The Air Force Academy made the trek up Interstate 25 Wednesday night to enter the Arena Auditorium. Little did they know an ambush awaited them.
The University of Wyoming Cowgirls were poor hosts, defeating the Lady Falcons of Air Force by a score of 98–36. The win pushed the Cowgirls conference record to 2–1 as they looked forward to the Border War this Saturday at Colorado State University.
The Wyoming Cowgirls brought a strong game as they took and maintained the lead against Air Force. Within the first 15 minutes of the game each Cowgirl starter had made a shot. Freshman Kayla Woodward, one of the team’s forward players and top scorers of the night, shot 21 points during just the first half of the game. Her performance, by halftime, was already a career high for her. By halftime the Cowgirls were winning 51–18.
There was no doubt that the court belonged to the Cowgirls as their hard work lead to victory. During the game’s first stanza the Cowgirls had rebounded the ball a total of 23 times while the Falcons only rebounded 12. The Cowgirls shot 60 percent compared to the Falcon’s 28.6 percent.
The second half was more of the same as the Cowgirls came out with a 28–4 run. In a game that saw all 10 Cowgirls play, nine of which scored, the Cowgirls showed their defensive tenacity.
Woodward finished the game with 28 point and also tied her career high with 10 rebounds. Freshman Kaitlyn Mileto added 15 points on five three-pointers. Ashley Sickles and Chaundra Sewell also scored in double digits scoring 14 and 10 respectively.
The Cowgirls will head to Ft. Collins, CO. on Saturday for the Border War against Colorado State University. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
