A how-to guide for online job applications

Student employment opportunities at the University of Wyoming are always changing, and students who do not know how to use the online application mechanisms could be at a disadvantage.

Applying for jobs online at the UW student employment website can be a tedious task and often takes more time than students can spare. But, with a few tricks and some creative copy-and-paste tactics, students can maximize what little spare time they have and get the job that pays the bills—or buys beer.

Tami Browning, UW internship coordinator, said students should target resumes and job application answers to each position they apply for.

“Don’t just have one bulk resume. Be relevant to the job you are applying to,” Browning said. She said students should always highlight relevant experience and skills, no matter the format of the application.

As for applications on the JobX website, there are some things students can do to streamline their applications.

When finding the right job (or jobs) to apply for, it is best to look at the time the job requires. If a student is not free at those times, they may not even be considered for the job. When students apply for jobs they are not free to do, their effort is less likely to be rewarded by a job offer.

When searching for jobs, the job list can be organized in several different ways. It can be searched by most or least hours available per week, most openings or the 25 most recent postings.

If students plan to apply for several different jobs, they should keep in mind that applying for jobs means retyping a lot of basic information. Information such as addresses and the three most recent jobs a student has had will be required on almost every application. A fast way to complete all the applications is to copy job histories and abilities from the first application into a document and later, when filling out another application, the information can be pasted into the new application.

The human resources department at UW takes care of JobX, the online application format. Job applications can be found at www.uwyo.studentemployment.ngwebsolutions.com. Students can call the human resources department at 307-766-2215 if they have problems.
