A Brief History
The University of Wyoming’s student run newspaper, the Branding Iron, was established in 1890s under the title of “The Student.” However, it was first run as a monthly publication and resembled a literary magazine more so than a newspaper. In 1912, it changed from a monthly publication to a weekly publication and was altered into a newspaper format.
In 1923, the newspaper’s title of “The Student” was changed to the “Branding Iron,” which is still in use today. In 1973, the Branding Iron began publishing Tuesday through Friday, a publishing schedule we continue to follow.
The Branding Iron is still run by students who serve as editors, section editors, and writers. The UW Student Publications Board oversees the paper, but the students who work at the “BI” make the day-to-day decisions that accompany a newspaper. The “BI’s” goal is to cover information relating to students as well as provide a voice for students.

Hello, I am a graduate assistant in ENR helping with the UW Campus Sustainability Committee. One of our current projects is an “Old Refrigerator” Energy Awareness Contest. We have WANTED posters around campus and just put out a UW press release for next monday about the contest. We are educating people about the impacts old and redunt (usually in pairs) refrigerators have on UW electricy costs and our climate footprint. The goal is to have faculty, staff, students submit a picture of their old or excessive refrigerator to the Campus Sustainability Committee. The worst offender will receive a New Energy Star model refridger and the “Old Refrigerator” will be removed and recycled. Other “non-winners” can also request to have their old refrigerator moved and recycled.
We have a great wanted poster that might look nice in the Branding Iron. I would be happy to provide a copy of it if you are interested and/or additional information.
I can be contacted at or 503*781*9601.
Thank you,
Kate Bodey
