Bouldering Semifinal Competition to be Held at Half Acre Gym

By

Climbers from all over the state will populate the climbing wall at Half Acre Gym this Saturday evening, January 26, when the venue plays host to the Wyoming Bouldering Series semifinal competition.

The event, which will feature both men’s and women’s climbing, will commence at 5:00 p.m. with registration preceding the event at 4:00 p.m. The men’s competition will run from 5-9 and the women’s will be held from 5-7.

As the only state competition of its type in the country, the Wyoming Bouldering Series will attract both top climbers from around the region and intermediate participants seeking a challenge. At least 80 climbers are expected to compete in the event.

Prizes will be awarded to top finishers and a large selection of raffle prizes from regional and national sponsors will be given away throughout the duration of the competition.

“There aren’t many events of this caliber held in Laramie,” said Outdoor Adventure Program coordinator Dan McCoy. “The Friday Night Bouldering Series is very much a homegrown event, but there will be competitors coming from all over the region to climb on Saturday.”

Most bouldering competitions are held on a national level and are extremely expensive to host. The Wyoming Bouldering Series, however, encourages a wide variety of climbers with different skill levels to participate.

“We’re really hoping for a great turnout from intermediate, advanced and expert climbers,” said McCoy. “It’s not an exclusive, elite competition by any means.”

McCoy added that it would be preferable that climbers have competed in a competition before, but the competition will certainly not exclude newcomers.

“There’s a pretty solid climbing community in this state and it’s cool that we can get together during the off-season and climb at events such as this one,” McCoy said.

The entry fee for the event will be $15 for Wyoming students and $20 for non-students, who must pay the extra $5 fee at the front desk of Half Acre before proceeding to the wall. Official event registration will be held at the climbing wall beginning at 4:00 P.M.
