History repeats itself with pokes style of season play
Published 12-7-2007
Sometimes I wish the past didn’t repeat itself.
After a promising 4-1 start, and thoughts of conference championships and bowl games in reach, the Cowboys crumbled. After the tumble began, I found myself thinking this was going to be a replica of the 2005 season … disappointing.
The Pokes always seem to start with such promise and 2008 will be the test of where this program is heading. Wyoming can’t just be a good start-off team. Fans want winning seasons and so does the athletic department.
The turnover in the offensive coaching staff will be the best turnover the Cowboys have had all season. Now we just have to see which offensive mastermind is chosen.
To the Cowboy defense: another job well done. You were the backbone of this team and I don’t even want to imagine how 2007 would have gone if the defense wasn’t as steady as it was.
While 2007 wasn’t a year of greatness, every season is a learning experience. The Cowboys just need to learn how to continue their success into the later part of the season.
Offensive MVP: Wade Betschart—Betschart was a constant positive for the Cowboys. He could always be counted on for a sure catch, but until his last home game, where he showed some first down pride, he acted like he has been doing it since he could walk.
Defensive MVP: The entire side—The Cowboys defense was the anchor of Wyoming. The tyke defensive line grew up fast. They caught onto the learning curve quickly and made opposing quarterback’s job quite a bit tougher. The linebackers were steady and their was enough of them to build a small army. The defensive backs and safeties kept the long plays to a minimum as most quarterbacks were too afraid to even throw it anywhere near Julius Stinson.
Rising Star: David Leonard—David Leonard showed his capability to use his size to take advantage of defenders. As a freshman, he showed composure and skills of a veteran. He has some years to continue to grow and learn, but I see Leonard making huge contributions in the 2008 season.
