Gallery seeks new vision via regulation

By

By considering creating a criterion for art selections, the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW) hopes to form a new vision for its art gallery during the spring semester.

The ASUW Gallery, located on the lower level of the Wyoming Union, displays artwork submitted by students. Each piece of art is submitted to the ASUW Advisory Board for approval. Art that is presented in a professional manner may be selected for display in the gallery.

There is currently no set theme for the gallery. By creating one, the ASUW Gallery staff would narrow the choices of artwork to be displayed.

“The gallery in the past has served as a space for exhibitions, but there has never really been a set criterion for what type of exhibits should be in the gallery,” ASUW Coordinator Michael Lange said. “In past years, just about everybody who has submitted applications to the gallery has received an opportunity for a show. But as the recognition of the gallery has grown, it has started to receive more applications than it has spaces for shows. There has also been a push to work both with the surrounding community and with academics through visiting artists, but as of now there is no funding for such events.”

ASUW plans to hire a student  to form the new theme within the week. The position will require the format of the gallery to be changed in new, creative ways for years to come. This will include working to inspire people to submit their work to the gallery and discussing the function of the gallery with the ASUW Gallery Advisory board.

”The main goal of this is to figure out what we can be doing with the gallery and how we can better serve the University of Wyoming and Laramie community,” Lange said.

According to the ASUW Gallery Web site, “The mission of the ASUW Gallery is to preserve, interpret, exhibit and make accessible works of art for the benefit of the community at large. The ASUW Gallery strives to challenge its visitors to acquire an appreciation of the arts and a greater understanding of a variety of viewpoints.”
