Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Dialogue kicks off

While some University of Wyoming students were traveling home from their three-day weekend on Monday, about 150 students and community members braved the cold to march in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

The march lasted about 15 minutes in the eight-degree weather and was led by a police escort from the front of the Albany County Courthouse to the Wyoming Student Union.

“It’s nice to be able to keep Martin Luther King’s legacy alive,” said Tara Miller, a speech pathology senior who participated in the march. “Even if we are in Wyoming, we can still find ways to show our support.”

A community supper followed the march. The gathering included entertainment from the Happy Jack singers and a gamelan, an Indonesian music ensemble performance, in the Wyoming Student Union Ballroom. Laramie K-12 students celebrated the civil rights leader by decorating the ballroom with art they had made.

Adriana Magaña, a UW senior from Green River, was named the 2008 recipient of the Willena Stanford Commitment to Diversity Award during the community supper. Magaña was selected for the award because of her active leadership in student organizations and activities at the university, according to a news release.

“What makes Adriana extraordinary is that she has the time management and leadership skills to actually promote change and to see the change through to fruition,” according to a Days of Dialogue release.

The award is given annually by the Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Dialogue committee to a UW student who has actively demonstrated a commitment to enhance and support diversity and equal educational opportunities for all students at UW.
