OAP plans events for tenth year

The Outdoor Adventure Program is offering some new trips for the Spring 2008 semester to celebrate its ten-year anniversary.
Registration begins Jan. 8 and eligibility extends to University of Wyoming students, faculty and staff.
In the past, snowshoe trips, rock climbing and cross-country ski clinics were offered. This year will bring the rise of new adventures ranging in difficulty on a technical and physical rating scale.
“We purposely geared our program toward getting the average student involved,” said OAP Coordinator Daniel McCoy.
Starting Jan. 19 with the 307 Bouldering Competition, participants are encouraged to attend the only state competition series held nationwide. For $42, students can participate. It is rated one of the program’s more strenuous activities, and requires its participants to have some experience in the background.
Half Acre will be hosting the semi-finals for this event, and UW will see some of the top climbers in the region compete. Intermediate and advanced routes will be created for both sexes. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers and a selection of raffle prizes from regional and national sponsors will be drawn.
For more information on the series, visit www.307bouldering.com.
The program will host a free route setting clinic on Feb. 9. Safety, etiquette and methodology will be taught in order to provide participants with a background in the area. Staff will assist in the development process, but participants also put their new skills to use as they are given the opportunity to build their own route. Though this clinic will not result in certification, it is an opportunity to learn more about climbing.
McCoy said he is most enthusiastic about the addition of another spring break trip. Typically, the program offers a canyoneering and rock-climbing trip to southern Utah, but 2008 also offers a canoe trip through Labyrinth Canyon, Green River. The trip is one of the program’s low to moderate physical activities with no prior knowledge required. Sandstone walls house the river’s beautiful landscape as the trip will commence toward the Colorado River. Each night, participants will be camping riverside and side hikes will also be taken on layover days. Equipment, meals and transportation will be included. The entire trip runs for an inexpensive $100 and is limited to 10 participants.
April 5 will begin a two-day excursion to Shelf Road, Colo. for a rock-climbing
adventure. The trip is a moderately difficult activity requiring some prior knowledge in order to participate. Normally, the program takes participants just outside of Lander for this excursion. Shelf Road will hopefully offer better weather than normal, and offer a different landscape to participants, McCoy said. Fees are $48 for students and $62 for staff members.
