Poetry gets slammed at King Street Market

By Noelle Lopez

Performance poets and poetry enthusiasts are welcome to attend the University of Wyoming Poetry Slam at 9 p.m. tonight as part of the seventh annual Martin Luther King Jr. March and Days of Dialogue (MLK-DOD) celebration.

The slam will take place at King Street Market in the Washakie Dining Center. The event is free and open to students, staff and the community to be both participants and spectators. Performers of all calibers are invited to read or recite original work of both written and spoken word. Participants will be judged by a panel to be determined at the event.

Poetry slam prizes will include free pizzas from King Street Market.

“The last few years we’ve had them have been pretty phenomenal,” Friday Night Fever program adviser, Cory Headley said. “It’s an opportunity for those with a deep appreciation of poetry to share the experience.”

The event is co-sponsored by Friday Night Fever and King Street Market.

Scheduled this year the week of Jan. 21-25, the Martin Luther King Jr. and Days of Dialogue celebration includes a week of activities that according to MLK-DOD ommittee co-chair Malinda Daniel are sponsored by UW organizations and Laramie businesses in the hopes to “renew UW’s commitment to make its campus a more welcoming and empowering place for people from different backgrounds, heritages, orientations and abilities.”

For more information, contact Cory Headley at or by telephone at (307) 766-6344
