The University of Wyoming is on the verge of surpassing their summer school attendance record set last summer with the help of the pell grant.

However, this will be the last year for students to enjoy this grant. University Associate Director of Institutional Analysis Sue Koller said the total number of students who attended summer school last year was 6,475, just a bit over the total summer attendance in 2009, which was 6,107.

Koller said she thinks the pell grant contributed to the spiked attendance of summer classes. The total attendance for this summer semester cannot yet be determined as the summer sessions are structured on a continuous enrollment schedule, Koller added.

Therefore, the current results cannot provide the entire attendance statistics. However, Koller said the 2011 summer session numbers are expected to increase beyond that of last year.

Jeremy Henion, a sophomore in pre-pharmacy, said although he thinks classes are more difficult during the summer because of the short period of time it takes to cover material he likes them because they are a way for him to forgo the classes he’d be taking during a 15-week semester.

Henion added that he enjoys summer sessions because of the class atmosphere.

Junior history major Nick Peterson said he shared the same views. He said he enjoys summer classes because of the small class sizes and how easy it is to get ahead in his major. He added, “I like to stay academically focused throughout my school career.”
