In the beginning of his career, Boy George was a part of the band Bow Wow Wow. He then broke off to form what would become Culture Club. No record company was interested in signing the band despite their many demos.

Virgin Records and Epic Records collaborated to represent the band and release their first album, Kissing to be Clever, in 1982. The album features the single “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” which peaked at number two in the United States and number one in several other countries.

Boy George Struggle With Drug Abuse

During the 1980s, George struggled mightily with his heroin addiction. At this point in time, he was using heroin on such a regular basis that he attempted to do live performances while he was under the influence. In 1986, he was taken into custody on an allegation of heroin possession.

In the same year, keyboardist and co-writer Michael Rudetsky was found dead at George’s apartment in London after having taken an overdose. After a short period of time, two more of his friends passed away as a result of an overdose, and this was the final straw that convinced him to seek help.
