Later that year, while performing at Switzerland’s Openair Festival, Scott urged his audience to attack a man who had ripped off his shoe while he was crowd-surfing. In addition to interrupting his show to spit on the man, Scott would tell the audience to “f*ck him up” multiple times.
While performing at the Astroworld Festival in his hometown of Houston, Scott noticed that the crowd was making its way in droves toward the stage. Ten people were killed and hundreds more were hurt as a direct result. The most damning evidence was a video recording of the concert which showed Scott continuing to perform despite the crowd chanting and pleading with him to stop.
The ripple effects of the tragedy at Astroworld keep growing. Plaintiffs’ lawyers Jason Itkin, Richard Mithoff, and Sean Roberts have categorised the thousands of lawsuits filed in the wake of that night into three categories: deaths, “extensive” injuries, and “less extensive” injuries.
Ten individuals were killed in total, including a 9-year-old boy who was crushed to death in the chaos. The lawyers have reported that of the remaining injured parties, 732 claims are tied to extensive medical treatment and 1,649 are tied to less extensive treatment.
Initial estimates placed the total cost of the lawsuits filed against Travis Scott and concert promoter Live Nation at $750 million. No official figure has been released, but as the number of people claiming injuries has grown, the total cost has surpassed the $1 billion level.
