Dilip Kumar began acting in 1944 and has since acted in numerous critically and commercially acclaimed films from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1980s. The level of emotion he brought to his roles was unparalleled in Indian cinema. He got the first ever Filmfare Best Actor Award and now has the most Best Actor awards of any actor.

He has acted in a broad variety of films, from the serious Devdas (1955) to the comedic Azaad (1955), from the historical romance Mughal e Azam (1960) to the social drama Ganga Jamuna (1960). (1961). In the 1970s, Kumar’s acting opportunities dried up, and he took a hiatus from the film industry that lasted until 1981.

He was 98 years old at the time of his death. One of the most famous actors of all time, he is credited with introducing a new kind of method acting to the movies and has been called the “Tragedy King” for his portrayal of dramatic characters and “The First Khan” of Bollywood for his historical significance.

After a disagreement with his father in 1940, when he was only 18 years old, he ran away to Pune. His fluency in the English language helped him secure a position in the business world.

He opened a sandwich shop in Pune’s Army Club. As soon as the contract was through, he packed up and moved to Mumbai, India, using the $5,000 he had saved. Bombay Talkies was located in Malad, and he met actress and owner Devika Rani there in 1942 thanks to Dr. Masani. In exchange for a monthly compensation of $1250, Devika Rani urged him to join the Bombay Talkies cast. His name was changed to Dilip Kumar at Devika Rani’s urging.

When Did He Make His Career Debut?

Jwar Bhata, his first picture, was released in 1944 and remained ignored. In 1947, he soared to fame by working with singer/actor Noor Jahan in the film Jugnu, which was a blockbuster. In 1949, he starred with Raj Kapoor in the romantic melodrama Andaz, which was a big success.

In Aan (1952), he played a swashbuckling peasant, and in Azaad, he was a comedy (1955). In 1960, he starred in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam, which is the second highest grossing Hindi film in inflation-adjusted history. He played Jehangir, the son of Akbar.

He produced and performed in the 1961 hit Ganga Jamuna with his brother Nasir Khan. Despite the film’s success, he made no more. Dilip was offered the role of Sherif Ali in David Lean’s 1962 smash Lawrence of Arabia. But Kumar declined. The part went to Egyptian actor Omar Sharif.

Kumar made fewer films in the 1970s as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan gained popularity. After 1976’s Bairaag, in which he played triple roles, he took a five-year sabbatical from performing.

Kalinga, his 1996 directorial debut, was shelved. He had his last film appearance in 1998’s box office disaster Qila, when he played a villain. He has since retired from the film industry, but he has continued to get film offers, which he has either declined owing to his poor health or shelved.

Some of his previous films are rerun on TV or on VHS and DVD. Some, like Devdas and Ram Aur Shyam, have been remade many times. Mughal-e-Azam, originally released in black-and-white with some colour scenes, was entirely colourized in 2004 and re-released.

Death of Dilip Kumar

It was in the morning of July 7th, 2021, at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai when Dilip Kumar, at the age of 98, passed away. On June 30, 2021, the actor was brought to the hospital after complaining of shortness of breath.

The actor’s official Twitter account later confirmed that his funeral would take place at 5:00 p.m. on 7 July 2021, at Juhu Qabrastan in Santacruz, Mumbai.
