Lance Bass Movie: Why He Broke Up With Danielle Fishel?

On the big screen, Lance Bass and Danielle Fishel are revisiting their high school romance.

While Bass, 43, was catching up with Fishel, 41, on her Pod Meets World podcast with her fellow Boy Meets World alums Will Friedle and Rider Strong, they dropped the bombshell that they are making a movie about their high school romance and prom date.

She revealed, “Lance and I are actually working on a movie about our love story and about our prom experience,” she said, noting that Lauren Lapkus and Mary Holland are penning the script.

When Did Fishel First Met Bass?

Fishel recalled how she first met Bass when she interviewed *NSYNC during an ABC TGIF live special. He was too shy to ask for her number himself, so he had his friend Justin Timberlake do it. Later, during her time off from the show, she traveled with the band and spent Christmas with his family in Mississippi.

“Lance and I had a very wonderful, very warm, loving relationship but it was completely lacking intimacy — intimacy in the romantic sense,” Fishel explained, adding: “I held on for hope for way too long that we were going to get back together and get married and have a family. … It turns out I’m not Lance’s type.”

Bass describes his high school romance as a time of self-discovery before he publicly came out as homosexual in 2006 on the cover of PEOPLE.

Why Did He Decide to Make This Movie?

“The reason we wanted to make this prom story into a film, I think so many people can relate to that story,” he said. “Where I think so many people in the LGBT community, their prom night was the night they’re like, ‘Oh, wait a minute. This can’t happen anymore. I can’t do this anymore.’

“So, this was the catalyst for me that made me start to accept myself, which took a long time after that, but that was definitely the first little straw that broke,” Bass added.

Fishel said that her prom date couldn’t handle the stress of the night’s traditional activity—reserving a hotel room. She reflected on the night in question, saying, “I had a vision for what that night was going to be, and Lance was extremely worried about what my vision for that night was going to be.”

After dating for two weeks, he ended things by saying they couldn’t work long-distance. Fishel, inconsolable, immediately contacted her mother, with whom Bass has a warm relationship.

When her mother inquired if he might be gay, she emphatically denied the possibility. Even though he didn’t come out to Fishel until much later, the two have remained inseparable friends.
