Johnson was born on the 2nd of May in the city of Hayward, California, on the 2nd of May 1972. Indeed, his family was a wrestling family, with both his father and grandfather having once competed in the professional wrestling industry. When he was a child, Dwayne spent a brief period of time in New Zealand with his mother’s family before returning to the United States. He attended Richmond Road Primary School in Auckland before returning to the United States and completing his 10th-grade year at a high school in Hawaii.

In 1996, Dwayne had several wrestling tryouts with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), in which he won one match and lost two others. Later that year, he was approached by the WWF and offered a contract, which he accepted.

On November 4, 1996, he made his television debut as a member of Marc Mero’s entourage on Monday Night Raw, and he competed in his first professional wrestling match at Survivor Series on November 17, 1996, in an eight-man elimination tag match.
