Are You the One? (sometimes abbreviated as AYTO?) is an American reality television series broadcast on MTV in which young singles attempt to find love through various means. A matchmaking algorithm is used by producers to secretly pair up a group of men and women into couples, which is then broadcast to the public. While living together, the contestants attempt to identify as many of these “perfect matches.” as they can. If they are successful, the entire group will share a prize pool of up to $1 million dollars. After seven seasons of male-female pairings, the eighth season introduced the possibility of a contestant’s match being anyone of any gender, including a male or female.
In each season, the contestants go on dates with partners who are selected through competitions (or, in the seventh season only, by the “fate button”), and they have the opportunity to learn whether or not a particular couple is an appropriate match by visiting the “truth booth” after each date. As soon as the truth booth confirms a perfect match, the couple will be whisked away to the honeymoon suite and will be automatically paired up for the remainder of the match ceremonies. At the conclusion of each episode, the contestants are paired up in a “matching ceremony” during which they learn how many perfect matches they have, but not which matches are accurate. When the house failed to identify any matches other than those that had already been confirmed through the truth booth, the prize was reduced. This was implemented in Season 3 and thereafter.
