The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming had first reading for two bills at Tuesday’s senate meeting. One would support more security in the Wildcatter Stadium and the other would support a proposed university welcome center.

College of Agriculture Sen. Joshua Messer authored a bill related to several drafts regarding alcohol in the Wildcatter Stadium Club, the luxury suites in the football stadium. Messer’s bill would rally ASUW support in favor of providing more security over to alcohol consumption in the Wildcatter.

Previous legislation on the topic, which failed weeks ago by a narrow margin, would have supported removing alcohol altogether from the Wildcatter Club and make the stadium’s policy regarding alcohol more consistent. Messer and former-Sen. Noah Hull, who resigned his position last week, were main the main proponents of the change. Messer and Hull both aid they hoped to bring a measure of safety and equality to to the stadium.

This new bill was borne of the discussion from the unsuccessful bill. A majority of senators were not in favor of removing alcohol from the Wildcatter, but were rather for adding a measure of security. According to the wording of the bill, the legislation was created in the hope of reaching a compromise with the Athletics Department.

A second bill had its first reading, which will outline ASUW support for the construction of the University of Wyoming Gateway Center. The Gateway Center was approved by the UW board of trustees in February and will be a new location for first-stop locations like the Admissions office. The building will also be home to new ASUW senate chambers. The new center is planned for the corner of 22nd Street and Grand Avenue.

Both bills will have second and third readings next week at the April 2 senate meeting. After discussion, ASUW will vote on the bills.
