Well it was inevitable, one of our group got sick. Cat fell ill last night, we believe the culprit was her eating copious amounts of dairy and meat which she doesn’t consume much of on a regular basis. Unfortunately Cat was left behind as we once again rode the chicken buses to the school. Today we taught the kids how to make play doh. This giant mess proved to be a lot of fun. The kids took to the doughy sticky substance like Americans to baseball. The teachers seemed to like it even more. They saw how entertained the kids were, and started asking us for our supplies. We happily gave over everything we had, especially the food coloring we used for dye. Apparently food coloring does not exist in Guatemala.

The trip is half over and we are finally learning our ways around the streets. All of us are definitely a lot more comfortable than the first day. Although the smells still through of us. We discovered today that the constant wafts of a pungent feces smell is coming from the parrot at our host family, and I will never get used to the smell of burning trash which is the common disposal method here. Grant it, every time there is the smell of anything cooking all of our stomachs start to grumble.
After lunch and a quick nap, we headed back to the school to meet the older kids. Today we had a mission. Teach the kids about germs and brushing their teeth. Something so simple to us back in the states, yet most of these kids did not even have a tooth brush until we gave them one. We were split into four groups. One group recorded the kids heights and weights, and gave them vitamins. The next colored pictures of germs with the kids. The third group taught the kids what bacteria was and used glitter to show how easily it was spread. The final group just played with the kids outside. The kids were transferred between the groups so everyone got to go to every station. The grand finale was a play about why you should brush your teeth, which our loyal travelers happily did with costumes and everything. After everything was done we handed out tooth brushes and left to discover Guatemalan crepes. These delightful dishes were a lot of food, but of course we couldn’t pass up spoiling our dinner for more local food.
