Health fair offers place to voice concerns

Ivinson Memorial Hospital will host the annual health fair Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 7–11 a.m., in the West Atrium of the hospital to promote healthy living with free and low-cost screenings.

The fair is open to the public.

Jaime Stine, IMH assistant marketing director, said, “We’re here for [the community]; whatever you need.”

Stine said the hospital has striven to keep Laramie healthy and believed the health fairs give the community opportunities to do so.

The fair offers the community a more open way to talk about health concerns and solutions. Individuals will be able to talk one-on-one with specialists about any health problems and general health checkups. The health fair will have fun free activities, Stine said. IMH-registered dieticians will direct healthy recipes and cooking tip seminars. The dietary department will also provide healthy snacks.

Stine said free screenings will include blood pressure, osteoporosis, vascular disease, pulmonary function, sleep, mammogram and fall risks. Many other screenings will be provided at low costs such as a blood screening.

Stine said she believed every event is successful if just one resident becomes aware of a hidden health issue.

“Our mission is promoting health care for our community,” Stine said. “All staff members dedicate time for this fair.”

The health fair gives the different departments a way to work together, Stine said. Normally the staff stays in their respective wings, Stine said, but the fair gives each member a way to collaboratively work towards their mission.

Stine said the fairs are typically held once a year, so residents should take advantage of this one. The hospital also hosts more specific fairs throughout the year such as the Prostate Screenings in September. Last September, more than 100 men were able to attend.

When contacted, University of Wyoming Student Health was not able to offer information.

UW pharmacy and nursing students team up with Student Health and hold an event every fall, Fall Into Good Health, which provides students with similar screenings.
