UW Idol asks: ‘Do you think you have what it takes?’

Friday Night Fever invites students to show off their hidden talents.

Though it can be caught on FOX at 8 p.m., eastern time, few get the live experience of seeing singers fail and prosper in an American Idol-type scenario. This is exactly the reason Friday Night Fever started up UW Idol.

UW Idol is a three-week process of finding the best performer on the UW campus. Open call auditions will start at 9 p.m. Friday in the Union Ballroom.

“I think most of our people will end up signing up the day of open call,” Kathryn Nicola, the marketing chair for FNF, said. “It seems to be a lot easier for people to come in last minute to the event. Also, people thinking about it, yes or no, all week will get a final shove on Friday.”

Auditions are to be singing for 30 seconds a capella in front of a panel of judges. All auditioning must be either full- or part-time students.

At the end of the open call, the judges will tally points for each participant and choose the top 15, plus five alternates.

The judges for the open call audition will be volunteers or members of the FNF office, and there will be a different selection of judges for semi-finals and the finals round.

“We try and make all of the judges be experienced in the music field, so that it can be a little more objective,” Nicola said.

Prizes for the finals round include $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, $300 for third place and $100 for an audience choice award.
